Bio
Trash - noun
[tra-sh]
Discarded matter
Collage - noun
[col-age]
a technique of composing a work of art by pasting on a single surface various materials not normally associated with one another
Consider trash. There is probably trash near you as you read this. Can you smell it? Have you ever considered how much trash a single human being can throw away in a day? What about a week? What about a lifetime? What about the trash you can't hold?
What about the audio waves of trash you throw away every second of every day? You walk into a room, and ignore the sound of your footsteps, your breathing, your blood flowing, even your muscles moving. You can be as wasteful with sound as you can be with objects. In the same respect one can just as easily record a piece of trash and nail it to a song as they can a canvas.
While listening to Dada Trash Collage's forthcoming LP "Neighbors", you may find yourself wondering where the sounds that make up the 7 song, 45 minute record come from. They come from you.
With an album where a bass is rarely a bass, a keyboard is rarely a keyboard, and a backup vocal may not come from a human, you'd be better off looking to items laying around your home than musical instruments for answers. Though the band worked with indie producer Scott Colburn (Animal Collective, Arcade Fire, Yeasayer), the audio on "Neighbors" was just as much collected at gas stations in Wisconsin, kitchens in Michigan, theme parks in Florida, and city buses in Minnesota as it was recorded in a studio.
In this assemblage of audio collages you will still find drums, you will still find guitars, and pianos; yet somewhere conveniently placed in the core of a pop song, you will find the sound waves of your everyday life that you have long since forgotten.
Shortly after the May 4th "Neighbors" release, William Freed will bring the music of Dada Trash Collage to the road for the second half of 2010, including a tour in late June with Zola Jesus. Until then let "Neighbors" be a reminder of what the things you throw away could create.
