OLD INTERVIEW!

An Interview With:Words As Weapons

by Jennifer Shaw

Early February 2005: A pair of old friends are reunited after a long break from their music careers. The two members, Brandon and Tyler, begin to gather at Brandons house on a regular basis, trading acoustic guitar songs and talking about the days of their previous bands. It wasnt long before the two had started, what would later become, Words As Weapons, a Dayton-born fivesome. Within mere weeks of intermittent music nights, the two had begun to write their own original songs and scheduled a few outside gigs to showcase their material.

I think it was about this time they it hit them.
Hey, they said, people like our stuff.
Words As Weapons was born, ideally, in April of 2005.

Fast forward to November 2005: Now as a five piece, Billy, Brandon, Idris, Dave, and Tyler spend their days playing, writing, and purchasing new equipment for themselves. I never thought of music as something I could do for a career, says ba*sist Billy. Compiled as a band of five close friends and a strong love for music, it is easy to see how Words As Weapons has come so far in so little time. Someone told me that we are the most talked-about band [in this area] and that if we had a recording it wouldnt be long, says guitarist Tyler. That was one of the best compliments Ive ever received for anything. Im excited to record.

Before the formation of the band as a five piece, it was the initial thought of Brandon and Tyler to remain a four-piece. With this in mind, they sought after their good friends Idris and Dave to fill the rolls as Ba*sist/Screamer and Drums. We clicked instantly and I remember thinking Oh man I really think this is it, says vocalist Idris. Then the writing began. Songs were appearing from old notebooks and scrap sheets of paper, and being mixed with new ideas and ambitions. The sound we came out with was pretty impressive, says Tyler, but something was missing. It was around this time, Tylers childhood friend Billy expressed interest in joining the group. After much thought and consideration, they felt it would be in the best interest of the music if Idris were to become a dedicated screamer/backup vocalist and have Billy step in as ba*sist with only three weeks to spare before their debut show. After a few practices the [chemistry] was obvious and all the good music followed, says Dave. The band was complete and the stage was set

can someone hit the lights? (First show: Gathering Grounds - 9/16/2005, Sold Out)

Words As Weapons was born, to completion, in September of 2005.

Since then, Words As Weapons, claiming Dayton, Ohio, has been performing as an energetic five piece throughout Ohio. Show by show, the group gets closer and closer to achieving the status that theyve set their sights on. With these experiences and the backing of hundreds of committed fans, Words As Weapons will be entering the studio on November 22nd, 2005 to record a four-track EP (Title TBA) in a*sociation with The Foundation Recording Studio. Be on the lookout for their expected EP release show (Also TBA).

Its this intangible friendship combined with their desire to make music that drives these five boys from where they were before to where they are now, and ultimately where they will be for the rest of their lives. I dont know what I will do if not music, but it isnt something [that] Im worried about, says guitarist Brandon. I have plenty faith in our ability; were pretty good. Its the possibility drilled into the personalities of these few that keeps them doing what they love. This is something I want. I could do this forever, says drummer Dave. I love this stuff.

With the emo/screamo riffs of Brandons guitar, the post-hardcore drive of Tylers music, the southern rock of Idris vocals, the energy of Daves beats, and the strength of Billys ba*s, its not just about the music or the lifestyle,

its also about the heart.
